Carers Week Event 2019

As part of our annual carers week, today we hosted a free event to provide support and information to the unpaid carers of Liverpool. Held in Stanley Park’s Isla Gladstone conservatory, the event was a day full of fun and informative events focusing on the city’s carers.

The day began with speeches from Local Solutions’ chairman, Nigel Lanceley, and head of carers services, Hazel Brown, introducing visitors to the event and what the charity aims to provide to the local area. These were followed by a few words from 3 adult carers, who gave touching testimonials on their experiences as a carer and how Local Solutions’ services has helped them with this. Following the members of Local Solutions who spoke, Martin Farran, of Liverpool City Council, and Carole Hill, of the NHS, spoke about how their organisations are working towards better collaboration and understanding of the support that carers need. Liverpool’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Wendy Simon, formally launched the city’s “Integrated All-age Carers Strategy”, which aims to support all those that need it and encourage all agencies to recognise and respond to the needs of carers and finally the event was officially declared open by a short speech from the city’s Lord Mayor, Cllr Peter Brennan.

Multiple organisations from around Liverpool and beyond were present at today’s event, providing carers with advice or someone to chat to. As well as the many informative aspects of the day, there were many different activities offered for carers to take part in; including hairdressing sessions, arts and crafts, zumba and smoothie bike rides. A highlight of the day was the cake competition, where attendees could bring along their homemade cakes to be judged by Liverpool’s very own Great British Bake Off star, Flo Atkins! Flo brought along her own cake that she had baked at home, which she kindly donated as the main prize to our raffle. We would like to thank Flo for taking the time to come along and show her support to our cause.

There is estimated to be over 50,000 carers in Liverpool, so the Liverpool Carers Centre, run by Local Solutions, is an organisation that provides support and advice to many of these carers. The organisation works towards promoting the health and well-being of all the carers involved; lessening the negative impacts they might face with being a carer, making their lives easier and more enjoyable. The annual carers event allows the carers supported by us to come together and socialise with each other, as well as the many organisations that attended. The event takes place on only one day a year, but aims to highlight how carers can be helped and supported year-round.

We would like to say a massive thank you to all those that attended this year’s event, as well as everyone who worked to make it happen!
