What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a condition that affects approximately 10% of the
population. It is a neurological processing difference that affects
individuals in a variety of ways, the most common effects being
short-term memory problems, organisational difficulties and
problems acquiring effective literacy skills. Dyslexia is unrelated
to intelligence levels, however, as many dyslexics experience
difficulties in developing literary skills and have had previously
negative experiences of education, dyslexics often feel excluded
from education and employment. Therefore, dyslexia can have serious
consequences both economically and socially.
Dyslexia frequently goes undiagnosed and obtaining a diagnosis and
accessing services is a very costly process that few can afford.
Although there is no cure for dyslexia, it is a difficulty that can
be overcome with specialist teaching and by developing effective
strategies for learning.
