he purpose of the event was to engage with local residents to determine what they would like from an adult learning service. The most popular choices selected included Arts & Crafts, Health & Wellbeing, Floristry & Horticulture, Hospitality & Catering, Vocational courses, ICT, Humanities and personal interests.

Attendees were also asked to respond to a series of questions relating to adult learning, including:

‘What do you really want from a modern Adult Learning Service?’
‘What have you especially enjoyed?’
‘How would you like to find out about courses on offer locally?’
‘What is the best way to involve you in planning learning?’
‘What might prevent you from participating?’
‘Suggest any improvements.’

Participants had the opportunity to observe demonstrations including how to make hanging baskets and cupcakes – there were also honey tasting sessions by local beekeeper, Andy Hubbard.

Visitors also took advantage of the free reflexology, drum therapy and health and well-being stands as well as learning more about the support services available such as fuel debt and energy saving advice. There were also National Careers Service advisors offering careers advice, with employment opportunities in the social care sector from our Homecare service.

Raffles were drawn throughout the day with prizes including High Street and Tesco vouchers, hanging baskets and watersports sessions.

Rita Smith, Operational Manager from Local Solutions Training Department commented “it was a fun and informative day but most important we were able to capture what courses residents want to see delivered in their local area.  A wide range of responses were put forward, which will be very useful information for Local Solutions and the Adult Learning Service; this information will be forwarded to the Council in the form of a report”.
