Mersey Mermaids on BBC Radio Merseyside

Mersey Mermaids on BBC Radio Merseyside

On 25th July, BBC Radio Merseyside ran a feature on the Mersey Mermaids, a group of open water swimmers who meet every Tuesday at our watersports centre in Queen's Dock.

The interview was part of the Tony Snell breakfast show and included 4 of the swimmers as well as Brendan Roche - one of our watersports centre instructors.

During the interview the mermaids explained why they enjoy open water swimming.   Some of the reasons they gave included it gets rid of your worries, it nice to be outside, there's no pressure and you get to meet all different sorts of people.

They also gave some useful advice to anyone who finds themselves in cold water (whether it's for open water swimming or if they fall in). "Relax, think about your breathing and then think about where you need to go"

If you would like to try open water swimming there are sessions at Liverpool Watersports Centre on Wednesdays (5-8pm) and Sundays (9-11am).  Swimmers of all experience are welcome and we have a café where you can buy warm drinks and cake after your swim.  You can find out more information here.
