Sisters take on new challenge

Sisters take on new challenge

Two sisters who regularly attend the Liverpool Carers Centre here at Local Solutions, have taken on new roles as ‘gardeners in residence’!

L-R: Doreen and Jean at the plots.

Doreen Maher of Old Swan and Jean Rooney of Stoneycroft, along with other carers, were asked by the Centre if they would like to take over responsibility of tending to the vegetable plots located on land at Local Solutions’ headquarters.

Growing at the thriving plots are lettuce, shallots, beetroot and green beans which are distributed amongst carers. Jean commented: “We aren’t experienced gardeners but we said yes anyway and we’re so glad we did! Not only do we enjoy it very much but it’s actually great exercise – we feel fitter and we’re getting lots of fresh air.”

The sisters have been attending the Centre for approximately three years – they each became carers for their husbands, both of whom suffered serious illness. Jean’s husband had dementia whilst Doreen’s husband had cancer. They have both sadly passed away.

The spritely ladies both attend the weekly Tai Chi class at the Centre and also use the on-site gymnasium. They also participate in planned walks and go on excursions and day trips organised by the Centre.

Doreen is also reaping the benefits; “ We no longer have to buy our veg from the supermarket so we’re saving money which as pensioners is great. In addition to that we’re eating healthier.”

Jean continued: “We’re so grateful to Local Solutions – they provide us with all the tools and seeds and the Centre itself is an absolute lifeline to us both.”
