Carers Event 2010

National Carers Week 2010 commences on the 14th June with this year’s theme being ‘A life of my own’ . Liverpool’s event, a joint venture between the Liverpool Carers Centre and Liverpool City Council, will be held on Thursday 17th June from 10.30am until 3pm and will be a day for carers to gain information about services and support they can access for themselves and the people they care for.

Carers Week highlights the vital work done by those who provide unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail or disabled. The theme ‘A life of my own’ calls for greater recognition of carers who all too often feel isolated, lonely and pushed to the margins of society.

Along with many other events taking place across the UK, the ‘Carers Week Event 2010’ (which will be officially opened by the Cllr Hazel Williams, Lord Mayor of Liverpool at 11am) will enable carers to speak to representatives from organisations in the city who provide support as well as initiatives that are currently in place to enhance the mind and body which coincides with Liverpool’s ‘Year of Health & Wellbeing 2010’.

Kathy Newton from Liverpool Carers Centre said: “Many carers in Liverpool suffer due to lack of understanding about what they do and some don’t even see themselves as carers.  This has a real and negative impact on their health, finances, working and social life, and general wellbeing. The ‘Carers Week Event 2010’ is one of many activities and services that Liverpool Carers Centre provides to support carers who feel isolated.”

Carers Week is organised by a partnership of seven national charities: Carers UK, Counsel and Care, Crossroads Care, Help the Hospices, Macmillan Cancer Support, Parkinson’s UK and the Princess Royal Trust for Carers.
