National Carers Week 2008
Carers in Liverpool celebrated National Carers Week 2008 with a
successful event at St George’s Hall.
The event, themed ‘Carers can’t afford to be ill’,
was held on 12th
June 2008 and organised by Local Solutions in partnership with
Liverpool City Council.
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Steve Rotheram, performed
the official opening.
In addition to the many exhibition stands providing information
about the wide range of services for carers and the people they
care for, there were presentations, demonstrations, health checks,
and the ever popular beauty treatments and complementary therapies.
As part of National Carers Week and to mark the City’s year
as European Capital of Culture in 2008, Liverpool Carers Centre in
partnership with Liverpool City Council also held an art and poetry
competition for carers.
The objective of the competition was to produce a piece of art or
poetry based on the theme “Culture of Caring”
and was open to carers in four age categories:
11 yrs and under 12 -17 yrs 18 – 49 yrs and 50+ yrs
Prizes and certificates were awarded to the top three winners in
each age category at the annual event.
The overall winner was Karen Chitty whose entry will be used as the
design for the official 2008 Liverpool City Council Christmas Card
. Karen cares for her son Ford who is 19 years old and has severe
learning disabilities. Commenting on her triumph she said, “I
am delighted! My work was inspired by artists such as Picasso
during his blue period and represents the closeness carers and the
cared-for feel.”
