Merseysport  (Watersports Centre)

Alan, a young man with severe learning disabilities, visits the  Merseysport centre once a week, accompanied by his carer. Alan, whose disabilities include no communications skills, low concentration and poor co-ordination, thoroughly enjoys his hourly sailing sessions.  His carer has expressed how much the activities have helped him, not only in stretching his abilities but also in meeting new people.

Service user, Paula, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, has been canoeing at the Merseysport Centre since she was eight years old.  Paula, now 23, comments, “accessibility for disabled people at the Merseysport centre is extremely good, and I would like to see more disabled people taking advantage of the facilities on offer.  These include a lift to take you down to the water’s edge, and specialised equipment.  The staff and instructors are extremely helpful and friendly, and help to make the lessons great fun.”
